SIELE Exam: What Is It?
SIELE (Servicio Internacional de Evaluación de la Lengua Española) is an international exam that assesses proficiency in the Spanish language. It follows the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) scale and covers levels from A1 to C1. This prestigious exam is promoted by the Cervantes Institute, as well as leading universities in Spain and Latin America.
SIELE is suitable for students, teachers, professionals working in international companies, and anyone looking to certify their Spanish language skills for education, employment, or immigration purposes. The SIELE certificate is widely recognized worldwide and is accepted by many universities, employers, and educational institutions.
SIELE Exam Structure
The exam consists of four main sections:
Reading Comprehension
- 5 texts of varying difficulty levels
- 38 multiple-choice questions
- Assesses overall text comprehension, interpretation of words in context, and analytical skills.
Listening Comprehension
- 6 audio recordings ranging from 2 to 5 minutes
- 38 questions
- Each recording can be played twice. You will have about 30 seconds to review the questions before listening. Depending on the level, you must understand the main idea, identify key details, or analyze the speakers' perspectives.
Written Expression and Interaction
- Writing a short informal message (30–50 words)
- Composing a formal letter or an article on a given topic (50–70 words)
- Evaluates the ability to express thoughts in writing, grammatical accuracy, and logical text structure.
Oral Expression and Interaction
- 5 discussion topics
- Listening to audio questions and recording responses
- In most cases, you can choose one of two suggested topics
- Assesses pronunciation, fluency, grammatical accuracy, and the ability to interact in a conversation.

Additionally, you can take the exam online or at an official testing center at a time and location that suits you.
International Recognition
The SIELE certificate is recognized worldwide by universities, employers, and government institutions. It can be used for university admissions, job applications, and immigration purposes.
Scoring and Certificate
After completing the full exam, you will receive a SIELE Diploma, which includes scores for each of the four sections. The overall result is graded on a 1,000-point scale, corresponding to CEFR levels A1–C1.
If you take an individual module, you will receive a SIELE Report, which provides scores for the selected sections and their CEFR equivalents.
The SIELE certificate is valid for 5 years, making it a convenient and long-term way to certify your Spanish proficiency.

Why is it important to learn Spanish?
There are currently approximately 580 million Spanish speakers worldwide; that's 7.6% of the world's population. In fact, Spanish is the second most widely spoken language in the world and the third most widely used language on the Internet after English and Chinese.
How long does it take to learn Spanish?
It takes the average person between 575 and 600 hours to get from zero to fluent Spanish. Fluency is difficult to determine because everyone progresses at different rates and there are many contributing factors.
Why are the exclamation points and question marks inverted in Spanish?
The inverted question mark was adopted around 1754, when the Royal Academy recommended the use of this symbol to indicate the beginning of a question in written Spanish, such as "¿Cuántos años tienes?" The institution also ordered the same system of inverted symbols for exclamatory expressions using the symbols "¡" and "!"
Does Spanish have dialects?
Spanish spoken in Spain is different from Spanish in Argentina. Spanish is quite varied when it comes to spoken form, varying to different degrees from one country to another, especially in pronunciation and vocabulary. Variations exist not only between European Spanish and Spanish in the Americas, but also in many different dialects of Spain and Latin America.

DELE is an official document certifying the degree of competence and knowledge of Spanish, issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education.
