What is HSK?
HSK (汉语水平考试 Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì) is a standardized Chinese language proficiency test for non-native speakers. The HSK has 6 levels. The division into levels is done according to the vocabulary a participant must possess. For Level 1 it is 150 words, for Level 6 it is 5 thousand words. Accordingly, the complexity of grammatical structures also increases with each level.
Is Chinese grammar very complicated?
Chinese grammar is not complicated, but it is unusual for us. There is a strict word order in the sentence - subject, predicate, and complement. There is an inversion, but it follows the rules. In Chinese, the word form does not change, there are no inflections or conjugations.
What to do to memorize characters and words effectively?
Learn single syllables (the characters that make up words). Knowing single syllables allows you to guess the meaning of a word. Understand what parts a character is made up of. Hieroglyphs consist of keys and graphemes. The key is in every hieroglyph, it is needed to search in dictionary and also sometimes defines what kind of concepts a word belongs to. The graphemes can sometimes tell you how to read a character, and often make them easier to remember.
How do I remember what all the characters mean?
There are about 70,000 characters in the largest dictionary of the Chinese language. But nowadays, it's customary to count not the number of characters but the number of words. The language of everyday communication in most languages is based on 1200-2000 words. Most words of the Chinese language are two-syllable, they consist of two characters. Hieroglyphs are often repeated in words, so their number is less.
